Balloon-powered cars, like the ones in Figure 1, are fun to build and even more fun to play with. In this project you will be challenged to build and test your own balloon-powered car. A balloon-powered car consists of three main parts: The body of the car (piece of cardboard or plastic bottle in Figure 1)
Balloon Cars Grades K-8, Engineering, Science. Lesson Overview. In this activity, students design and build a balloon-powered car for play or to compete in a performance challenge. The car design includes a custom 3D printed base, inexpensive toy wheels, and common hardware.

Your balloon car uses jet power to move. The stored air in the balloon pushes through the straw, creating thrust—the force that pushes the car forward. So when air from the balloon moves in one direction, it pushes the car in the opposite direction.
Balloon Powered Car is a fun science experiment for kids to do at home which demonstrates the law that even governs the fastest vehicle that we knows of- Rockets. Kids always enjoy making their own toys and making a balloon powered car is a fun learning experience in which the kids construct their own car and learn about principles like energy conservation and laws of motion.
Primary school pupils investigate which model car design is faster; one propelled by an elastic band around the axel, or a balloon-powered car which doesn’t directly power the wheels.

Here’s the challenge: Can you make a balloon-powered car that moves by itself with simple supplies like a bottle, balloons, straws, wheels, a push pin, a dowel and tape? Watch the video to explore the science behind how it works (hint: think kinetic energy) and then follow the link to see how to make this cool car! Sign up to receive a kit that has the supplies!
In this engineering project, you’ll be designing a balloon powered car. Here, you’ll learn about how Newton’s third law can be applied to design propulsion vehicles like our car or a rocket.

Your balloon powered car is a good example of Newton’s third law of motion. It states, “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This means that if object A pushes on object B, object B pushes back on object A with the same amount of force. In the case of the balloon-powered car, the air is pushed out of the straw in one.

The moving Balloon-Powered Car is using kinetic energy. If you aim your car down a ramp from the top of the ramp, just lifting it up into position adds potential energy thanks to gravity. Upon release, the energy converts to kinetic and the car goes until there’s not enough to move it anymore.
Supplies to start with: A balloon, a plastic cup or bottle, straws, thread, and rubber bands. This 2016 video is one in a series created to get kids excited about engineering. Download the engineering challenge cards pdf to explore this DIY activity and others. Related at Scientific American: Build a Balloon-Powered Car.
Students will watch a video lesson, discuss science principles, and follow steps to make their own balloon powered car. Learning Objectives After this lesson, students will be able to:

Balloon Powered Car Design Another style of balloon cars, for this one, first use your imagination to construct LEGO cars in various designs. Then, put a few blocks at the back of your cars to hold the balloon straw ensemble.
Students will learn the concepts of Newton’s Law of Motion, friction, jet propulsion, and air resistance by designing and constructing a balloon powered rocket car. Objective To build a Balloon Rocket Car that can extract the most energy out of the inflated balloon and make the vehicle travel the longest distance.
